Why Do I Need an Appointment for a Medication Refill?
We understand that requesting a medication refill can sometimes seem routine—especially if you have been taking the same medication for a long time and feel that it is working well.
However, medication refills are an important part of your ongoing medical care. Whether a refill request comes from you or directly from your pharmacy, there are times when an appointment is needed before we can authorize another prescription.
What is included in a prescription?
A standard prescription includes:
- The name of the medication
- Directions for how to take it
- The quantity to be dispensed
- The number of authorized refills
Once the authorized refills have been used, we may need to see you before providing a new prescription.
Why is a follow-up appointment necessary?
Even when you are feeling well and have been stable on a medication for a long time, your medical needs can change. A follow-up visit gives us an opportunity to make sure that:
- The medication is still appropriate for your condition
- You are taking the correct dose
- The medication is being taken as prescribed
- Your treatment goals are still being met
- The medication continues to be effective
- You are not experiencing concerning side effects or other safety issues
Regular medication reviews are an important part of providing safe, effective care.
“But I haven't had any problems with this medication.”
That is good news! Feeling well and doing well on your medication is exactly what we hope for.
However, being stable does not necessarily mean that a medication should continue indefinitely without reassessment. Periodic follow-up allows your healthcare team to confirm that the medication remains appropriate and that the benefits continue to outweigh any potential risks.
What if I have several medical concerns?
Medical visits are generally focused on one or two priority concerns so that we have enough time to address them appropriately.
If you take several medications or have multiple medical conditions, we may not be able to review everything during one appointment. Some concerns may need to be addressed at a separate visit.
Don't wait until you run out
If you know that you are getting low on a medication, please contact our office before you run out. If a follow-up appointment is required, scheduling ahead of time can help prevent interruptions in your treatment.
Our goal is not to make obtaining your medication difficult. These periodic reviews are part of responsible medication management and help us make sure that your treatment continues to be safe, effective, and appropriate for you.
